I’ve got worms!

The good kind, that is.  My pound of red wiggler worms arrived today.  I built a worm bin using these instructions.  Yes, I even drilled by myself!  So, my worms came and I frantically started cutting up newspaper, dampening it to make the bedding.  I added my worms and viola!  My own personal composting unit- vermicomposting- great for the environment, great for my garden, great for my trash!  If you know me, then you know I’m trying to go as green as I can.  I use recycled toilet paper and paper towels, using cloths as much as I can.  I use cloth grocery bags and I garden.  I’m even going to head up the “Green Team” at school with my buddy, Gina, the new PTA president.  (shh, it’s a secret)  Pretty soon I’m going to have to make another worm bin, because I’m going to use one in my classroom for our cafeteria waste, as part of a project I have to do for my technology endorsement.  If you want to find out more about vermicomposting, check out the Adventures of Herman the Worm. Okay, okay, I’ll show you the pictures already!

  1. I never told you this but back in the 70’s I went to Miami Dade College and took a Composting 101 class and French Biointense Gardening class (like square foot gardening). I would save our table scraps in a beautiful casserole crock with a top and everyday put it in the compost. I have know idea where that crock went when we moved here. When we moved to West Palm I had 2 compost areas that Dad turned and we made our own top soil from it. Talk about worms….yes, we had worms. I had one at Willow Wood too but Marge’s son put too many green cuttings in it and it smelled. Normally it would never smell but he dumped too many grass loads in it. She asked me not to keep it anymore. So now you know why you are into the greening of America, it’s in the genes. Happy gardening and I love your into gardening. Mom

  2. that is very interesting – I will go check out that website – what about rain barrels do you anything about them?

I started a veggie garden and its exciting to see the little tomatoes starting to grow – hopefully the other things will grow as well.

I have the reusuable grocery bags and I am getting better at remembering to bring them with me!!!

  4. I am so jealous, I have wanted to vermicompost for months now! I just dumped my whole compost bin into the garden on Saturday. I love that black gold! Who knew I’d been so damn proud of my dirt?!
Only problem now is that I won’t have brown matter to add until fall and god knows I don’t want to smell my nasty rotting produce alone in the bin for months. I think I need some worms… It would solve everything.
Jason is going to love it when I tell him “Becky has one! I want one too!” This is his next project when he’s done with the chicken coop!
    Love you – J

  5. Hey, I meant to tell you to give my dad a call if you ever want any cow manure for your garden.

And also, my hubby’s letting me get worms…hehe!

Next I want reclamation barrels for water and that rotating composting bin.
